Four firefighters and two civilians were treated at a hospital after a Freon leak inside a refrigerator unit at a Ralphs market in Irvine filled the air with that hazardous chemical, according to officials.

Firefighters were called to the market at Alton Parkway and Jeffrey Road just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, said Capt. Greg McKeown of the Orange County Fire Authority.

One firefighter sustained moderate injuries, McKeown said. Three other firefighters and two civilians were treated for minor injuries, McKeown said.

Firefighters ensured the Freon leak was no longer a danger when they cleared the scene about 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to an Orange County Fire Authority dispatcher.
